Beautifally Tinted by Lewis NY photographer.  Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War as an officer in the 19th New York Volunteer Infantry, rising from Captain of Company G to Colonel and commander of the regiment. He also spent time on the staff of Major General Nathaniel P. Banks as an Additional Aide-de-Camp. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services during the war". He was a leading authority on early Jesuit missions and became a recognized scholar of early Iroquois history, dedicating himself to the study of Spanish Hill. He was the first to receive the Cornplanter Medal in recognition of research. His materials were given to the Cayuga Museum. He also served as Auburn City Engineer and Surveyor.
