He was commissioned Major of the 4th New Jersey Infantry on 17 August 1861 and promoted to Lieutenatn Colonel on 7 September 1861. He was appointed Colonel of the Regiment on 28 August 1862 when Colonel James H. Simpson was recalled to Regular Army service. On the CampaignHe commanded the regiment in Maryland. The rest of the WarHe was mortally wounded in the leg at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862, his leg was amputated, and he died two days afterward at a field hospital near Fredericksburg.
